Before he began working in television, Susovan Sonu Roy’s experience in the performing arts was largely connected with dance and live stage performances. He trained in Western dance for around two years and took part in stage shows. Acting came later, eventually becoming a regular part of his professional work.
Roy was born in Howrah and grew up in Kolkata. His connection with Guwahati has also remained significant through his maternal family, while Kolkata has been the base of his professional career. He completed his B.Com from Dum Dum Motijheel Rabindra Mahavidyalaya in 2016.
Roy entered television in 2019 with Anandamoyee Maa, which aired on Akash Aath and was directed by Debidas Bhattacharya. He played a Vaishnav devotee in the serial. His subsequent television work included appearances in Bengali productions such as Mohor, Korapakhi, Jamuna Dhaki, Titli and Khelaghar.
The move from stage to television brought a change in the way he worked as a performer. Stage performances involved working directly before an audience, while television required working with scripts, cameras, scene-wise production and the schedules of serial productions. His television assignments gave him experience across these aspects of on-screen work.
Roy subsequently began working in modelling. In 2023, he entered the field professionally and worked on advertising and commercial assignments involving brands including Holiday Inn Hotel, Dabur, Velocity Eyewear, Amazon, Spencer’s, Big Bazaar and others.
Modelling involved a different form of camera work from television acting. Commercial assignments generally required attention to visual presentation, expressions, posture and styling, while his television work was centred on scripted characters and scenes. Both became part of his professional activities in the entertainment industry.
In December 2025, Roy participated in the Ethnic Elegance 2025 pageant in Kolkata, where he was named MR. ETHNIC ELEGANCE 2025 – 1st Runner-Up. The event added runway presentation to his earlier experience with stage performance, television and commercial modelling.
His work also extends to Bengali cinema. Roy plays Joy in director Soumojit Adak’s Take Care Bhalobasa. The film centres on four friends and their relationships, with their personal equations forming part of the story. As Joy, Roy is part of the group of friends around which the film’s narrative develops, making the role part of the film’s central interpersonal storyline.
The role of Joy places Roy in a different production format from the television serials in which he has previously worked. Unlike his earlier television assignments, the film gives him the opportunity to portray a character within a self-contained feature-film narrative, with Joy’s interactions contributing to the relationships explored in the story. Film requires performers to work within a longer narrative while scenes are produced according to the requirements of a feature-film production.
His career has consequently involved several forms of performance rather than one continuous track. Dance provided his earliest experience on stage, followed by television acting, commercial modelling and runway work. Cinema forms another part of that professional record.
There is also a practical difference between each of these mediums. A stage performance is presented directly to an audience, television work is produced around an ongoing schedule, modelling focuses largely on visual presentation, and film brings those performance skills into a feature-length narrative. Roy’s work across these formats has taken place over several years.
From his early stage performances to television productions, modelling assignments and his role in Take Care Bhalobasa, Roy’s work has covered different areas of the Bengali entertainment industry. The progression has been from one performance medium to another, with acting remaining a recurring part of his work.
