Diwali Celebrations Organized for the First Time in Five States

Washington: Diwali celebrations were organized for the first time at the official residences of the governors and state capitols of five states. The celebrations took place in Idaho, Nebraska, Montana, North Dakota, and Washington. Diwali celebrations are scheduled for November 10 in Oregon. These events were organized jointly by the Indian Consulate in Seattle and community leaders. The governors of these states—Washington Governor Bob Ferguson, Idaho Governor Brad Little, Nebraska Governor Jim Pillan, Montana Governor Greg Gianforte, and North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong—led the celebrations in their respective states. In addition, Diwali celebrations and lamp lighting ceremonies were organized under the leadership of multiple city councils and mayors across Washington State. The Indian Consulate noted that approximately 200,000 Indian Americans reside in the Seattle area. Taking into account the significance of Diwali and the contributions made by the Indian community, various state and city governments have issued special proclamations.
