Sana (Yemen): Amid ongoing conflicts and security threats in Yemen, 19 Indian sailors who had been stranded for the past two weeks in Hodeidah and the capital Sana'a were safely evacuated. The Indian Embassy in Yemen announced on Sunday that the rescue operations had been successfully completed. The Embassy confirmed that all the rescued sailors are safe, healthy, and currently en route back to India. The official announcement of the successful rescue mission was made via the social media platform X by the Indian Embassy.
The Embassy’s statement clarified that the safe evacuation of the sailors was the result of concerted efforts to ensure the security of Indian nationals trapped in conflict-affected regions. The Embassy expressed gratitude towards all parties involved for their cooperation and support, noting that their roles were crucial to the successful evacuation. Considering the conflict situation in Yemen and the security challenges prevailing in various areas, the safe evacuation of 19 Indian sailors is a highly reassuring development. The rescue of these sailors, who had been in uncertainty for two weeks, has brought relief to their families.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that the ongoing conflicts in West Asia continue to pose serious security challenges to Indian citizens. Earlier this month, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala informed that 23 Indian nationals, including 15 sailors, had lost their lives in incidents related to the regional conflicts. Additionally, reports state that five Indian nationals were killed and two remain missing following attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea region.
These incidents highlight the severity of security threats faced by Indian sailors working in the international maritime sector. With conflicts in West Asia and adjacent maritime areas impacting the security of commercial shipping, the importance of ensuring the safety of Indian sailors continues to grow.
On the same day that news of the completion of the Indian sailors’ evacuation from Yemen emerged, missile attack attempts were reported targeting Saudi Arabia. The Saudi-led coalition announced that two ballistic missiles aimed at Riyadh, the Saudi capital, were intercepted and destroyed by air defense systems. The coalition accused the Houthi armed group in Yemen of launching the missiles.
In light of the threat, civil defense authorities in Dammam, Abqaiq, and Al Ahsa—eastern provinces of Saudi Arabia—issued security warnings, urging residents in areas deemed at risk to seek shelter in safe locations and strictly adhere to official instructions. The Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sari claimed responsibility for conducting six missile and drone attacks targeting strategic centers in Saudi Arabia.
The successful completion of the Indian sailors’ evacuation comes amid the complexities posed by internal conflict in Yemen and security tensions with Saudi Arabia, which complicate the regional situation further. While concerns persist regarding the safety of Indian nationals working in conflict-affected areas, the evacuation of the 19 sailors who were trapped in Yemen represents a significant achievement for India.
However, apprehensions remain that deteriorating security conditions in West Asia will continue to challenge international maritime transport and the safety of Indian citizens employed abroad.
